On Our 21st Birthday, It's Time to Hit Pause.
Dear Friends & Family,
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Azuka Theatre is saddened to announce that we are postponing our spring show, the world premiere of Lena Barnard's A Room at the Flamingo Hotel. We must also postpone our remaining New Pages public readings, which would have taken place in May, and featured plays by Erlina Ortiz and Alexandra Espinoza.
While this news is disappointing, the health and safety of our artists and audiences are and always will be our highest priority. As part of that priority, our artists for A Room at the Flamingo Hotel will still be paid to the best of our ability, despite the fact that Azuka will not draw any income from the show.
If you are in a position to help us pay our artists, we would be most grateful.
As you know, Azuka's last four seasons have been Pay What You Decide, so there is no cost of a ticket or subscription to donate in lieu of seeing the show. Instead, we ask that you donate the cost of something else you might not be purchasing at this strange time. You could offer Azuka a donation from your breakfast-on-the-go fund, from your after-work drinks budget, or the money you might have put into your SEPTAKey this week.
We know the economic forecast is daunting for many of us, but if you do have a little extra from these small savings, please consider becoming a recurring donor to Azuka. By joining the people we call RAD (Recurring Azuka Donors!), your $5 or $10 a month could add up to sustain Azuka's quality, radically affordable theater we're known for. In fact, this month marks Azuka's 21st year of making theater! It is a strange time to celebrate a birthday, but it doesn't stop us from being hugely proud to have reached this milestone, thanks to artists and audience members like you!
And when it's safe to do so, Azuka cannot wait for the day we can invite you all back to the theater, regardless of financial means, to experience stories of outcasts and underdogs, and new plays by great Philadelphia playwrights, together.
Be well,
Kevin Glaccum, Producing Artistic Director
Maura Krause, Artistic Associate
Mark H. Andrews, Co-Founder & Marketing Director
Janelle Kauffman, Company Manager
Lucas McLean, Administrative Assistant
and the Azuka Theatre Board of Directors
