2026 Summer Sprint - Week 5

July 27, 2026 by Mark Andrews

Hello Azuka Friends & Family!

A new play begins with a lot of unknowns.

A question that hasn’t been answered.
A character who is still revealing themself.
A room full of artists trying something that might not work—until suddenly, it does.

That uncertainty isn’t a flaw in the process. It’s where discovery happens!

But discovery requires room.

Room for a playwright to take a risk.
Room for actors to explore rather than rush toward an answer.
Room for collaborators to listen, challenge one another, and find the version of the story no one could have imagined alone.

A few of the rehearsal rooms over the past many seasons including: All My Mothers Dream In Spanish (2023), Boycott Esther (2019), and Bob: A Life In Five Acts (2018).

That is the bigger why behind Azuka’s Summer Sprint.

We believe Philadelphia artists deserve the time and support to create bold, original work—not just when funding is easy to find, but especially when it isn’t. We aren’t simply raising money to complete a campaign. We are building the conditions that allow ambitious, surprising, deeply human theater to exist.

Theater that doesn’t tell you what to think.

Theater that trusts you to wrestle with difficult questions, recognize something unexpected in another person’s story, and leave the room a little more curious than when you entered it.

At the halfway point of this campaign, we are asking you to help us expand the room—for artists, for audiences, and for the new stories waiting to be discovered.

Make Room For What Comes Next

Your gift does more than support a production. It gives artists the time, trust, and stability to make something none of us can fully predict yet.

And honestly, that is the exciting part.

Warmly,

Allison Heishman
Artistic Director

Managing Director

Autumn Blalock
New Play Development Director

P.S. We are halfway through the Summer Sprint. A gift today helps determine how much room we can create for bold ideas in the season ahead. Donate today.
