Announcing our 2021-2022 Season!

We’re Back!

Azuka Theatre is thrilled to safely welcome you back to in-person theater and announce our 22nd season with three new plays by three Philadelphia playwrights -- all of whom are currently or have been members of our New Pages writers group!

In addition to these productions, we're excited to announce that we've hired TWO new Artistic Directors! Both of them bring unique skills and perspectives that will be invaluable as we guide Azuka into the next chapter of its history. You'll get to learn a little bit about them below, but we can't wait for you to meet them in person!

2021-2022 Season

Young Money

By Erlina Ortiz
Directed by Briana Gause
November 3 - 21, 2021

This fiercely funny and energetic play is the perfect way for Azuka to re-emerge into a season of live theatre. We want to greet this moment with a music-filled story of people from different generations and differing perspectives coming together to find common ground. A rapper whose star is on the rise meets the woman cleaning her dressing room moments before a big city concert. What ensues will have you bobbing to the beat and laughing out loud one second, but will stop you in your tracks and take your breath away the next. This one is the right play for right now.

Carroll County Fix

By Val Dunn
Directed by Priyanka Shetty
March 2 – 20, 2022

Carroll County Fix takes us out of the city to a town that was once rural, but is now an exurban area outside of Baltimore. This play is inhabited by young people with big dreams and their parents who don’t quite understand them. All of these characters are completely unique and utterly relatable at the same time. A lot of us have spent extra time with our loved ones and in deep reflection mode over the past year and a half, and will relate to the shifting relationships and desires for something MORE that these characters are grappling with. Carroll County Fix is part small town story, part romance, part family drama, part laugh-out-loud comedy. This one is for the dreamer in all of us.

Reverie

By James Ijames
Directed by TBA
May 4 – 21, 2022

Reverie brings us right back to the city with a piece by one of Philly’s most celebrated playwrights, which feels like the best way to close out our season. The story takes place in the apartment over a mom and pop Vietnamese restaurant in South Philly. Jordan, a grad student, is taking a shower when he hears a knock at the door. His surprise visitor is Paul, a Southern pastor who has recently lost his son. We don’t want to give very much away, because experiencing it with fresh hearts and minds is the best way to travel through this play. Reverie is a dream of a play filled with beauty, longing, joy, and laughter. This one is not to be missed.
