Black Affinity Night
Saturday, November 8 @ 7:00pm
Black Affinity Night is a selected performance for Black community members to collectively experience 1 Pound 4 Ounces. After the show, enjoy music, light refreshments, and a chance to mingle.
About the event
This play is more than entertainment; this story is an autobiographical work of a Black man who grew up in South Philadelphia, which he generously shares with the world! Some of the things he shares are common experiences in our communities, yet they are rarely mentioned in shared spaces. One of the biggest goals of this piece is to allow Black people in the city with whom these experiences may resonate to see them spoken about, elevated, and staged instead of silenced, hidden, or shamed.
A part of removing shame is creating intentional spaces where the Black community can come together without fearing judgement. Therefore, we specifically ask that people who identify as a part of the Black diaspora attend. Our doors are always open to everyone, but we kindly ask non-Black patrons to celebrate with us another night. If you do join the affinity night, please come with respect and prepare for a non-traditional theater experience!
As a company, we amplify the voices of people whose stories often go unheard and today we celebrate the voices of the Black community.
We recognize that there is a large discussion in theater about affinity spaces. To join the conversation, reach out to our Director of New Play Development, Autumn Blalock.
