Mel Hsu and her cello, Charles, are rather inseparable. Although Mel was raised as a classical cellist, she and Charles have been coaxing each other into unexpected collaborations with dancers, filmmakers, actors, rappers, poets and visual artists for the past eight years. Mel's performances have been described as “the feeling of being alone in a dark church, reckoning with a god that you do not believe in.”
Mel is a teaching artist with Girls Rock Philly and Play On, Philly. She composes and performs for film, theater, dance, poetry and epic neighborhood parades. Her work has premiered at theSXSW Film Festival, Poetic License Theater Festival, NY Indie Film Theatre Festival and BAM Film Festival. Mel and Charles travel regionally and nationally as musical support for various ensembles and projects.
When Mel and Charles need a healthy break from one another, Mel can be found dancing around the bass, the guitar, the piano or any kitchen appliance that can be played with a durable spoon.
